You have decided to start a home business. Don't make that decision lightly. Studies show that 80 - 90% of home businesses fail. Plan accordingly and you will be better able to beat those odds. Here are some basic steps to get you going.
Prepare a business plan. This will be the very foundation of your business. You can do this by following these steps:
What type of business do you want to get into? Are you wanting to sell products, services, or both. , would you be offering services, or would you like to try both? In any case, you must decide on which particular product and/or service you would want to focus.
Have difficulty deciding? Take a few minutes to do this fact finding exercise.
a) What are you passionate about?
Write down all the things you love to do in your free time. There is no wrong or right answer in this step. You are really doing some soul searching here and gaining an understanding of where you really want to spend your time.
Why is this step beneficial? The activities you are passionate about are those that you will be willing to put the most energy into as a business. Let's face it. If you start a business doing something you hate you are basically buying yourself a job. If you're willing to do something without being paid, you'd definitely do it for money. The only difference is, money will only come second, as compared to the immediate satisfaction you get from doing what you love.b) What are Your Strengths?
In your working life you have accumulated a great deal of useful knowledge. This expertise, believe it or not, will help you as you consider a home business startup. Don't overlook this experience.
Write down any specialized skills you may have developed. It may be in sales, event organization, public relations, accounting, counseling, etc. These will be part of the assets you bring to your business.c) Where do you head in a book store or garage sale?
Where you naturally go may give you some additional insight into what you want to do. You may be surprised when you think this one over. Your sub-concious actions may give you some insight to into some hidden passions that you have never considered pursuing because of a lack of confidence or failing to consider them as a business.d) What Passions have you given up?
Our lives change. Did you have a passion that you used to pursue that you have put aside because of time constraints? Those passions are something that you have experience in and bringing them back into your live may bring a burst of new energy. Did you plan to start something new 5 years ago, but for some reason it never happened? Kids, marriage, or a demanding job are all things that sometimes get in the way if realizing our dreams.
e) What are you perceived to be the most comfortable?
Sometimes friends will have perceptions about your strengths that you never knew about. These "talents" may open doors to your own home based business that you never thought about. Call some of your friends and ask for their input. As them "What do think I'm good at?" and "When do I seem my happiest?"
You may find the questions quite enlightening. Write all their opinions down on your worksheet. The key to getting this right is to NEVER question or argue about their opinions.
f.) Now study the list and do some business research.
When you're done with your list of all the things you love, all the things you've become an expert at, and all the things you found out you're naturally good at, compare it to what is a hot business. Does your dream home business seem a little more clear now? You should see the begiining of an exciting journey that is now less intimidating.
You now have many ideas on what type of home based business you can do, and all you have to do is choose. Choose the one that you're most excited about RIGHT NOW and are eager to start RIGHT NOW.
If you rushed through this article without the pen and paper, without taking notes and asking yourself these questions, you have skipped an important step.
You cannot start a business without a capital. This includes the monetary or financial capital, material capital (supplies, gadgets, etc.), and manpower. Are prepared to invest all this into your business? Are you willing to incur debt?
Goals should start from general to specific. Develop short-term goals and long-term goals. Give them time frames such as one month, three months, six months, one year?
Visualize your goals. Have a vivid image of each goal in your mind. How do you see yourself a year or two from now?
Keeping those goals as part of your business roadmap will help increase your income. Review your goals regularly. Did you know that by merely doing so, you actually increase your home business success rate by 100%?
*E - ESTABLISHING YOUR BUSINESS.You are getting closer to the details of creating up your home business. This time, you are done with conceptualization and you are ready to get into action. You are now implementing the plan that you have prepared. Here are several steps that will help you establish your home business and achieve home business success:
For your venture to be a legal business entity, you need to work on certain formalities. These include registering your business name, applying for a business permit/license, setting up a taxation system, and other paperwork. In this step, you also formulate a compensation plan for your employees.
How do you create exposure for your products and/or services? Formulate a creative, innovative marketing plan. Consider these:
>Your target market. Clearly define your target market. This will help you decide which advertising and promotion strategies would be more appropriate to draw in your prospective clients/customers.
>Your products/services. Of course, your advertising and promotion techniques will greatly depend on the type of products/services that you sell/offer. Make sure your strategies will "sell" your products/services. If you are offering graphic designing services and you give out poorly-made flyers, you will surely attract no clients at all.
>Your resources. You cannot aspire for grand and complicated advertisements if you are limited by financial constraints. You can, however, maximize whatever resources are available to you to effectively promote your product. Take advantage of the Internet. By using e-mail, blogging, forums, etc., you can spread the word about your business in a flash!
>Your uniqueness. "Same-old, same-old" will give you no gold. You can still utilize the most common advertising/promotion strategies, but give them a twist. Think of the most creative ways to catch --- and hold! --- your customers' attention. Make offers they can't resist.
Your DMO should be practical, realistic, and goal-oriented. Set a schedule. Yes, it can work around family, but it should be a routine. Set your priorities for each day. Make sure that such tasks can really be done and that they are done for the purpose of reaching your goals.
Being your own boss does not mean that you can sit back and relax all you want. In fact, you must be more cautious about spending your time because your home business success depends on you --- the time and efforts that you commit to your venture.
Time management is often one of the reasons that the self employed will list as a weakness in their business strategy. Stephen Covey is one of the best known authors for time management. Take a minute to check out these books.
